ONEONTA, N.Y. – The nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team broke open a tight game at the half by outscoring Oneonta, 9-3, over the final 30 minutes to earn a 13-6 road conference win Saturday afternoon. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 10-0 overall and 2-0 in the SUNYAC, while the host Red Dragons dropped to 2-8 and 0-2.

Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) paced Cortland's offense with six points on four goals and two assists. Sophomore
Matt Savlov (Liverpool) tallied a season-high three goals, sophomore Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy) scored twice and junior
Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) recorded one goal and two assists. Junior

Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) and freshman
Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) each netted one goal.

Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 13-of-20 faceoffs and collected a game-high 11 ground balls. Hopps scooped up four ground balls with Rakoczy, Slavik and junior
Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) recording three apiece. Winterfeldt also chipped in with an assist.
Daniel Stern and Devon Casey led Oneonta with two goals each. K.J. Theofield and Alex Haffner netted one goal apiece, Connor Coyle had two assists and Jim van de Veerdonk chipped in with one assist. Van de Veerdonk also finished with a team-high six ground balls, while Scott Sorrillo added five and Coyle collected four. Goalie Chris Miles stopped 20 shots.
Oneonta led 2-1 at the end of the first quarter. Cantelli gave Cortland a 1-0 lead at the 13 minute, 24 second mark, but Casey and Stern netted goals just six seconds apart four minutes later. Rakoczy and Theofield traded goals to open the second quarter before Savlov and Rakoczy scored inside of two minutes to give Cortland a 4-3 lead at intermission.
Casey tied the score at 4-4 at 13:13 of the third quarter, but the visiting Red Dragons ran up four consecutive goals from four different players for what seemed like a comfortable 8-4 lead at the 6:36 mark of the third. Oneonta closed the quarter with two of the final three goals and trailed just 9-6 enterting the final 15 minutes of action.
Cortland dominated the fourth quarter to pull away and secure the victory, outscoring Oneonta 4-0 while winning 4-of-5 faceoffs and owning a decisive 16-6 advantage in shots. Consul recorded half of his points on two goals and one assist in the quarter.
