CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally 24th-ranked Cortland women's volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a pair of victories during Day 1 of the 29th annual Red Dragon Classic at Corey Gymnasium. Cortland swept Pitt-Bradford in three sets, 25-17, 25-9, 25-10, and beat Baruch in four sets, 25-16, 23-25, 25-12, 25-14.
For the first time this year, the tournament features a predetermined schedule instead of pool play and championship brackets. Cortland will face Mount Union Saturday at 11 a.m. and Rochester at 4 p.m. Four teams – Cortland, Juniata, Nazareth and Mount Union – are 2-0 entering Saturday's action.
The 12-team tournament field features seven 2012 NCAA Div. III tournament participants, including national quarterfinalist Clarkson and second-round teams Cortland, Juniata, Mount Union and Richard Stockton, along with Baruch and Nazareth. Four schools are ranked nationally this season – Mount Union (11th), Juniata (20th), Clarkson (23rd) and Cortland.
Senior opposite hitter Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) led Cortland versus Pitt-Bradford with eight kills and no errors in 12 attempts. Sophomore outside hitter Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) recorded six kills with no errors in 12 attempts and senior middle hitter Ava Hintz (East Aurora) added five kills with no errors in 10 attempts.
Freshman setter Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) totaled 22 assists and nine digs. Givelechian and senior libero Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) also registered nine digs each.
Against Baruch, Givelechian put down 15 kills and had 11 digs, while Hintz finished with 12 kills and four blocks, three solo. Barrett totaled seven kills, four blocks and nine digsd and Roberts distributed 42 assists and added eight digs.
Junior middle hitter Mary Kelly (Guilderland) led the team with five blocks and added six kills. Freshman Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) paced the squad with four aces and Silk recorded a team-best 15 digs.
