OT Goal Caps Cortland Comeback in 4-3 Win vs. #15 Skidmore

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Jillan Vogl (Cazenovia) capped a Cortland comeback from a 3-1 deficit with a goal seven minutes, 26 seconds into overtime as the Red Dragons defeated nationally 15th-ranked Skidmore, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at the Stadium Complex White Field.

Vogl finished the game with one goal and two assists. Senior Erin Smith (Greene), who assisted on the game-winner, led the Cortland (1-0) offense with two goals and an assist, while freshman Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) tallied her first career goal. Junior goalie Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made nine saves, junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene) registered two defensive saves and junior Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) recorded one defensive stop.

Junior Melanie Webb (Sandwich, MA) paced the Thoroughbreds' (1-1) offense with two goals. Sophomore Jenn Hanks (Niskayuna) netted a goal, and sophomore Dani DeGregory (Greenwich) chipped in with two assists. Junior goalie Haley McDougall (Saratoga Springs) turned aside 13 shots. Junior Sam Revera (Miller Place) had two defensive saves, while Hanks and Webb each recorded one.

Skidmore opened up an early 2-0 lead on a penalty-stroke goal from Hanks at five minutes, 12 seconds and a one-time goal in front by Webb at 13:39 off a cross by DeGregory.

Stein put Cortland on the scoreboard just 3:52 into the second half when she one-timed a pass from Vogl after the Red Dragons kept possession following a penalty corner. Smith had an opportunity to tie the game for Cortland, but McDougall denied her penalty stroke at the left post at the 52:11 mark. Exactly six minutes later, Webb tallied her second of the game on a deflection in front to make it a 3-1 game with just under 12 minutes remaining in regulation.

Smith pulled Cortland to within 3-2 just 62 seconds later, blasting a long rebound shot through traffic and McDougall's pads. With time winding down and the Red Dragons pressuring, Smith scored the equalizer on a long, one-time shot from the left side off a feed from Vogl on a penalty corner.

In overtime, the Thoroughbreds had two players sent off with cards and Cortland eventually capitalized while Skidmore was still one player down when Vogl ripped a shot inside the right post at 77:26 after Smith led her with a long diagonal pass.
