Red Dragons Open Union Invitational With Win vs. Hartwick and Loss to Williams

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Cortland split two matches during the first day of the Union College Women's Volleyball Invitational. The Red Dragons swept Hartwick, 25-22, 25-9, 25-15, but lost in straight sets to Williams, 25-13, 25-20, 25-14.

Cortland (5-6) will face Union Saturday at 1 p.m. and Nazareth at 3 p.m.

Sophomore Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) led Cortland with 15 kills and added eight digs and senior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) finished with 11 kills in the win over Hartwick. Senior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) served three aces and freshman Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with 21 digs.

Hannah Strom led Hartwick with seven kills and 14 digs. The Hawks lost to Union following their match with Cortland and are now 2-9 on the season.

Williams improved to 6-1 overall and 2-0 at the tournament with its win over Cortland. Tori Jasuta paced the Ephs with 12 kills and 12 digs and Raea Rasmussen added 10 kills. Ryan Farley dished out 30 assists.

Junior Kelly Knauerhase (Cortland) led the Red Dragons with seven kills. Hintz finished with six kills, senior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) recorded 23 assists and Silk paced the team with nine digs. Freshman Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) followed up an 11-dig performance versus Hartwick with eight digs against Williams.
