GENEVA, N.Y. – William Smith's Taylor Cappello scored two goals, including the game-winning tally five minutes, 37 seconds into overtime, to lift the nationally ninth-ranked Herons past visiting 15th-ranked Cortland, 2-1, in a non-league field hockey matchup.
William Smith improves to 5-0 with the victory, while Cortland suffers its first loss of the season and is now 3-1.
Amy Feda made seven saves in goal for the Herons, while Red Dragon junior goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) stopped nine shots.
Cappello scored the game-winning goal during a penalty corner play. Melanie O'Connor took a shot from the top of the circle and Cappello redirected the ball into the cage. The Herons recorded the only two shots taken by either team in the sudden-victory overtime and finished with a 14-11 edge in the category.
William Smith grabbed a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute of the contest when Cappello knocked in a rebound past Perricone. Cortland threatened late in the half with five shots in the final six minutes, but four were stopped by Feda and another blocked by a defender.
The Red Dragons, however, broke through the tying goal just over 10 minutes into the second half. Cortland was awarded a penalty stroke and junior Abbey Wentlent (Greene) converted to knot the game.
With 10 minutes left in regulation, Cortland had three shots in just more than a two-minute span saved by Feda. Perricone also came up big between the pipes late for Cortland with three saves in the final seven minutes, including a stop with 13 seconds left and another during a penalty corner with time expired.
Cortland will play at nationally top-ranked and 2012 NCAA Div. III runner-up Montclair State Saturday at 11 a.m.
