CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Cortland men's soccer team scored a goal in each half and defeated visiting Medaille College, 2-0, in non-conference action Tuesday night at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 3-3 with the win, while the Mavericks fell to 3-5.
Seniors
Bryan Merlos (Harrison) and
Joe Buffolino (Commack) scored Cortland's goals. Buffolino and junior
Darren McCormack (Dublin, Ireland/Fingal) each recorded an assist.
Red Dragon junior goalie
Tim Beauvais (Hilton) made six saves in recording his second consecutive shutout. Freshman goalie Tyler Brew (Brockport/Aquinas Institute) registered six saves for Medaille.
The Mavericks had the first chance to score in the game. After a Cortland turnover, Beauvais had to make a diving stop at the right post on junior Austin Tom's (Lancaster/Central Christian Academy) shot in the eighth minute. The Red Dragon eventually broke through just 44 seconds before the half. Buffolino served a pass into the box from the right side that deflected off a defender, and Merlos blasted a one-time shot into the upper right corner.
Buffolino made it a 2-0 game in the 63rd minute. McCormack delivered a corner kick into the middle of the box where Buffolino sent a header that just eluded Brew. The Mavericks had one final chance to spoil the shutout, but Beauvais denied junior Mike Raftu's (New York/Marta Valle) direct kick with a leaping save at the upper left elbow.
