CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland opened SUNYAC women's volleyball conference play with a four-set win over visiting Oswego. The Red Dragons lost the first set, 26-24, but won the next three sets, 25-8, 25-16 and 25-13.
Cortland (9-10, 1-0 SUNYAC) will play Potsdam Saturday at 10 a.m. and Oneonta at 12:30 p.m. to complete the first of three league rounds of three matches. The league has switched this season from a two-division format to a straight 10-team conference. Cortland will play three matches total this weekend, three in Potsdam Oct. 11-12 and three in Buffalo Oct. 25-26.
In Friday's other match at Cortland, Potsdam defeated Oneonta in straight sets, 26-24, 25-15, 25-21. Oswego will play Oneonta Saturday at 10 a.m. and Potsdam at 12:30 p.m.
Sophomore
Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) led Cortland versus Oswego with 11 kills and no errors in 18 attempts for a .611 attack percentage. Senior
Ava Hintz (East Aurora) added 10 kills and a career-high eight blocks.
Freshman
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) recorded eight kills along with career highs of six aces, 17 digs and two blocks. Freshman
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg Memorial) finished with a career-high five aces. As a team, Cortland served 17 aces – its most since recording 17 aces versus SUNYIT in 2007 and 19 against Buffalo State earlier that season.
Junior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) tied her career best with eight kills and chipped in with three blocks. Freshman
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) doled out 40 assists, notched 13 digs and registered a career-high four blocks.
