Freshmen Lead Red Dragons to 4-0 Win vs. St. John Fisher

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three Cortland freshmen scored all four goals to lead the Red Dragon field hockey team to a 4-0 victory versus St. John Fisher Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the Stadium Complex White Field. Cortland improved to 3-0, while the Cardinals fell to 2-2.

Gabrielle Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) paced the Red Dragon offense with two goals. Shelby Underwood (Marathon) contributed one goal and two assists, and Alexa Sanzone (Rome/Rome Free Academy) tallied a goal. Seniors Erin Smith (Greene) and Karly Vdoviak (Johnstown) each chipped in with an assist.

Junior goalie Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made one save to record the shutout for Cortland, while sophomore Danielle Famolaro (Rome/Rome Free Academy) registered six saves for St. John Fisher.

Stein gave Cortland a 1-0 lead, 15 minutes, 27 seconds into the game, one-timing a shot inside the left post off a pass from Underwood. The Cardinals' best chance to score came with just under 8:30 remaining in the opening half, but freshman Sarah Bisesi's (Brewerton/Cicero-North Syracuse) open shot on the left side just went wide of the left post. Stein struck again less than three minutes later, tapping in a shot at the left post with Smith assisting after a Cortland penalty corner.

Sanzone increased the lead to 3-0 just 1:37 into the second half, deflecting in Underwood's pass into an open goal on a penalty corner. Underwood completed the scoring with her first career goal at 64:38. Vdoviak sent a cross from the right side that Underwood one-timed past Famolaro.

Cortland out shot the Cardinals, 18-2, and held a 15-3 advantage in penalty corners.
