Cortland Drops Matches to Vassar and Stevens to Conclude Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. – Cortland dropped a pair of matches during Day 2 of the Vassar Invitational. The Red Dragons lost in four sets to the host Brewers and three sets to unbeaten Stevens Institute of Technology.

Cortland won the opening set against Vassar, 25-23, but lost the next three sets, 25-19, 25-9 and 25-16. Stevens won by set scores of 25-21, 25-22 and 25-21.

Cortland (3-5) finished 0-4 at the five-team tournament. Stevens won the title with a 4-0 mark, followed by NYU at 3-1, Vassar at 2-2 and MIT at 1-3.

Cortland senior Ava Hintz (East Aurora) was named to the all-tournament team. She recorded a team-high seven kills versus Vassar and shared the team lead with nine kills, with no errors in 16 attempts, against Stevens. She also registered three blocks in the Stevens match.

Sophomore Kim Givelechian (Roslyn Heights/Herricks) and freshman Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) each had five kills against Vassar. Givelechian and senior Krissy Silk (Massapequa Park/Massapequa) tied for the team lead with 13 digs and senior Aubrey Barrett (Liverpool) finished with four blocks.

Barrett totaled 31 assists and seven digs against Stevens. Givelechian matched Hintz with nine kills and junior Kelly Knauerhase (Cortland) added eight kills. Silk and Givelechian finished with 18 and 12 digs, respectively.

Taylor Mosley led Vassar with 13 kills and Mary Tobin paced Stevens with 10 kills.

Cortland will host the University of Scranton on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at 7 p.m.
