CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior
Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) scored a career-high 35 points and grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds as Cortland outscored Buffalo State, 102-91, in a SUNYAC contest.
The Red Dragons (8-3, 3-1 SUNYAC) reached the 100-point mark for the third time in three years, all versus Buffalo State at home. Cortland beat the Bengals last year, 100-89, and two years ago, 108-105 in overtime, at Corey Gym.
McMahon has now scored 988 career points. He made 11-of-16 shots from the field, including four dunks, and 13-of-17 free throws. He also matched his career high with four assists and led the team with three steals.
Junior
Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 22 points, pulled down five rebounds and dished out a team-high five assists. Freshman
Chris Williams (Bronx/Riverdale Kingsbridge Academy), who had not scored in only two minutes of playing time this season, scored nine points and grabbed four rebounds in 19 minutes.
Sophomore
Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) added eight points and five rebounds, while junior
Matt McGowan (Lake George) and senior
Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) tallied seven points each. McGowan added six rebounds, while Spendjian and sophomore
T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) each dished out four assists.
Buffalo State (6-4, 2-1 SUNYAC) featured five double-figure scorers. Roderick Epps (Uniondale) scored 23 points on 9-of-17 shooting and Bradley Doyley (Brooklyn/Sports Management) finished with 19 points and 10 assists. Doyley hit made three 3-pointers, including an shot from well behind half court to end the first half and pull the Bengals within one at 50-49.
Maurice Miles (Buffalo/Hutch Tech) came off the bench to scored 15 points on 7-of-8 shooting. Chris Castren (Voorheesville) made 3-of-7 shots from the 3-point arc in an 11-point effort and Justin Mitchell (Buffalo/Bishop Timon) added 10 points and three assists.
Chris Boyd (Buffalo/East) scored nine points and 3-of-6 accuracy from 3-point range and Jordan Glover (Buffalo/St. Joe's) recorded five assists. Legree Kirkland (New York/Frederick Douglas VII) led the Bengals with eight rebounds.
Cortland led 35-21 with 7:32 left in the first half and by 11 with 1:21 left before the Bengals scored the final 10 points of the period. Buffalo State led on three occasions in the second half, the last at 74-72 with 9:39 left, and the game was tied at 77-77 with 8:03 remaining after a Castren 3-pointer.
Back-to-back Spendjian layups put Cortland up for good, and the lead grew to 90-81 on two McMahon foul shots with three minutes left. Buffalo State was within five with two minutes remaining, but Cortland scored the next five points and were never threatened from that point.
Cortland outscored the Bengals by 27 points at the foul line. The Red Dragons made 31-of-54 free throws to Buffalo State's 4-of-12 shooting. Cortland finished at 57 percent from the floor compared to the guests' 49 percent. Both teams shot 39 percent from 3-point range – Cortland was 7-of-18 and Buffalo State went 13-for-33.
Cortland will host Fredonia on Saturday at 4 p.m.
