Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Red Dragons Fall at Geneseo, 55-52, on Late Run

GENESEO, N.Y. – Matt Curry scored 15 points, including the tie-breaking 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining, as Geneseo rallied to defeat Cortland, 55-52, in a SUNYAC men's basketball game.

The Knights (9-2, 3-1 SUNYAC) scored the game's final eight points to erase a 52-47 lead. Curry tied the game with a 3-pointer at the 1:26 mark and scored the game's final points with his go-ahead trey. Cortland (9-5, 4-3 SUNYAC) missed two potential game-tying 3-pointers in the final 13 seconds.

Curry made 5-of-7 shots from the field and led the team with seven rebounds. Gordon Lyons and Connor Fedge finished with 14 points apiece, with Lyons sharing the team rebounding lead with seven caroms. Fedge grabbed six rebounds and Thomas Decker handed out five assists. Geneseo shot only 28 percent from the floor in the first half, but hit 69 percent of its shots (9-of-13) in the second half.

Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) led Cortland with 12 points and six rebounds. Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) recorded 11 points and four assists and sophomore T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) scored 10 points, including 3-of-4 shooting from the 3-point arc, and dished out three assists. The Red Dragons shot 44 percent in the first half but only 30 percent after halftime.

Cortland raced out to an 18-4 lead nine minutes into the game. McMahon scored six points, Herron five and junior Matt McGowan (Lake George) four during that opening burst. Geneseo eventually drew within 21-20 on a Fedge layup with 3:02 left, but Cortland finished the half on an 8-1 run, capped by a Herron 3-point play, and the Red Dragons led 29-21 at halftime.

Geneseo took its first lead of the game at 38-26 on two Curry free throws with 13:31 remaining but never led by more than that margin until the final 3-point difference. Cortland went up 46-44 on two McMahon foul shots at the 6:29 mark and pushed the lead to five on a Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) 3-pointer with 5:17 left.

Decker answered with a 3-pointer 22 seconds later, but Spendjian made a free throw with 4:33 left and McGowan hit a layup at the 3:18 mark to re-establish a 5-point lead. McGowan finished with seven points. After the teams traded possessions, Lyons hit a layup with 1:56 left and Cortland turned the ball over at the 1:40 mark.

Following Curry's tying trey, Cortland missed a 3-pointer with 54 seconds on the clock. Curry hit the winning shot from the top of the arc after setting a screen for Decker. Cortland called timeout, and Spendjian missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left. McGowan was fouled on the rebound but missed the front end of a 1-and-1. Lyons, however, also missed a free throw, but a last-second contested 3-pointer by Herron was short just before the buzzer sounded.

Cortland will host SUNYAC leader Brockport Saturday at 6 p.m.
