McMahon Finishes with 30 Points and 13 Rebounds in 77-65 Loss to Brockport

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Brandon Caruthers (Rochester/East) registered 23 points, five assists and four steals as Brockport defeated host Cortland, 77-65, for its 10th straight win.

The Golden Eagles are now 11-1 overall and 5-0 in SUNYAC play. Cortland dropped to 9-6 and 4-4.

Caruthers made 7-of-13 shots from the field and hit all seven of his free throws. John Ivy (Rochester/East), who entered the game averaging more than 21 points per game, did not score in the first half due to early foul trouble but tallied 11 points in the second half on 4-of-7 shooting. Patrick Coyle (North Chili/Bishop Kearney) added nine points, on 3-of-4 shooting, and five rebounds.

Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) led Cortland with 30 points, 13 rebounds and four assists. He recorded his eighth double-double of the season and fourth in his last five games. McMahon made 9-of-14 field goals and 12-of-15 free throws. Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) and senior Garen Spendjian (Glen Cove) scored nine points each, while freshman Michael Kelly (Monroe/Burke Catholic) registered three assists.

Cortland held its only lead at 2-0 on two Herron free throws 18 seconds into the game. Brockport scored the next nine points to take a 9-2 lead. Brockport held Cortland without a field goal for almost 10 minutes to start the game, and the Red Dragons missed their first 13 shots from 3-point distance before finally connecting with 10:08 left in the game.

Brockport led 40-30 at halftime and scored the first five points of the second half. The lead grew to 21 points on three occasions. Cortland fought back to within 13 with 4:12 left and as close as 11 in the final minute.

Brockport shot 47 percent overall, 38 percent from the arc and 78 percent (21-of-27) from the foul line. Cortland was 44 percent from the field, but only 18 percent (3-of-17) from 3-point range. The Red Dragons made 22-of-29 free throws (76 percent).

Cortland will travel to Oneonta on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 8 p.m.
