Cortland Pulls Out 72-67 Win at Oneonta

ONEONTA, N.Y. – Junior Lamard Herron (Westbury) scored 22 points, including two crucial free throws in the final 20 seconds, as the Cortland men's basketball team defeated host Oneonta, 72-67.

Herron finished 9-of-14 from the field and grabbed eight rebounds. Senior Kevin McMahon (Hoosick Falls) scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting and added five rebounds while junior Matt McGowan (Lake George) scored a career-best 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and pulled down three rebounds.

Cortland (10-6, 5-4 SUNYAC) shot 63 percent from the field (30-of-48), although only 2-of-11 from 3-point range, and the Red Dragons made 10-of-13 free throws.

Oneonta (8-7, 5-3 SUNYAC) was led by Mikey McElroy's 15 points and seven rebounds. Jack Dignan added 11 points, Jackson Zuvic scored 10 points and Dan Lee dished out seven assists. The host Red Dragons shot 48 percent overall but only 29 percent from the 3-point arc (5-of-17), one week after hitting 15 treys in a win at Cortland.

Cortland led by as many as 10 points in the first half and was up 41-33 at halftime. Oneonta rallied and took a 56-55 lead with 9:20 left on a Zuvic layup, but Herron made a layup to start an 8-1 run that put Cortland ahead 63-57 with 6:16 remaining.

Oneonta eventually came back to tie the game at 65-65 on two Lee free throws with 1:52 left. On Cortland's next possession, McMahon hit a straightaway 3-pointer to put the guests up 68-65. After a turnover by each squad, Lee hit a layup with less about 40 seconds left and Cortland's lead was cut to one.

Oneonta did not foul Cortland until less than 20 seconds remained and Herron hit two foul shots to give the Red Dragons a 70-67 lead. Oneonta missed a layup and a potential tying 3-pointer on its next possession, and McMahon sealed the win with two free throws in the closing seconds.

Cortland will play at Brockport next Tuesday, Jan. 28, at 8 p.m.
