Cortland on Both Ends of Sweeps During Day 2 of SUNYAC Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland split two matches during the second day of SUNYAC women's volleyball play at Corey Gymnasium, losing in three sets to Fredonia before defeating Oswego in three sets.

Cortland is 3-3 in SUNYAC action and is in a four-way tie for fourth place in the league standings, along with Oswego, Brockport and Oneonta, with three matches remaining. Cortland will play Brockport, Plattsburgh and Buffalo State Oct. 24-25 in Plattsburgh. The top six teams will qualify for the SUNYAC postseason tournament.

Fredonia, currently tied for first with New Paltz at 6-0 in the league, defeated Cortland 25-12, 25-16, 25-18. Cortland was led by Sydney Hayward's (Trumansburg) six kills and six digs and Janine Patora's (Salt Point/Arlington) seven digs. Sara Madison and Paulina Rein led Fredonia with 11 and 10 kills, respectively.

Cortland (9-16 overall) finished the day with a  25-21, 25-19, 25-18 sweep of Oswego. Hayward paced the Red Dragon attack with 12 kills, Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) recorded nine kills and Mary Kelly (Guilderland) added seven kills and six blocks. Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 36 assists, Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg Memorial) served six aces and Ashley Ruggiero (Smithtown/Smithtown East) led the team with 22 digs.

Oswego (13-12, 3-3 SUNYAC) was led by seven kills apiece from Meaghan Roefs and Jessica Long and Stephanie Bailey's five blocks.

Cortland will play at St. John Fisher next Friday, Oct. 17, at 6 p.m. and at Nazareth on Saturday, Oct. 18, at noon.
