CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore
Shelby Underwood (Marathon) and junior
Sara O'Brien (Amherst) each scored twice as nationally 20th-ranked Cortland clinched the top seed in the SUNYAC tournament with a 6-0 win over visiting Geneseo.
Cortland improved to 11-2 overall and is 6-0 with one league game remaining next Wednesday versus Oswego. The Red Dragons will be the top seed in the four-team SUNYAC playoffs and will host the fourth seed in the semifinals Nov. 5. The league tournament has changed from four teams playing at one site to the top two seeds hosting quarterfinal games on Wednesday, with the highest remaining seed hosting the finals on Saturday.
Underwood finished with two goals and one assist, all in the first half. O'Brien scored once in each half, senior
Emily Woods (Williamsville/Williamsville North) added a goal and two assists and senior
Abigail Wentlent (Greene) tallied one goal.
Cortland outshot Geneseo, 26-2, including a 17-0 margin in the first half. The Red Dragons also earned 16 penalty corners to three for the Knights. Senior
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) started in goal and did not make any saves in the first half. Sophomore
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) recorded one save in the second half. Geneseo goalie Dayna Mercer (Katonah/John Jay) finished with 10 saves, eight in the first half. She made some acrobatic stops to keep the Knights within striking distance in the first 20 minutes.
Underwood, who leads Cortland with 12 goals this fall, opened the scoring when she beat two defenders off the dribble, made a spin move and knocked home a 10-yard shot 13:27 into the game. She scored again less than six minutes later when she redirected a ball from Woods into the cage from close range.
In the 23rd minute, Underwood sent a crossing pass from the right side that O'Brien knocked in to extend the lead to 3-0. Woods blasted in a shot from the top of the circle in the 29th minute for her fourth goal of the season and the Red Dragons led 4-0 at halftime.
Cortland was awarded a penalty stroke 1:43 into the second half after Mercer illegally covered the ball in front of the cage. Wentlent took the stroke and scored her fourth goal of the season. O'Brien completed the scoring in the 50th minute when she redirected in a ball at the left post off a pass from Woods. O'Brien has now scored three goals this fall.
Prior to the game, Cortland honored its five seniors – Woods, Wentlent, Perricone,
Erica Wharton (Putnam Valley) and
Bri Musselman (Bethlehem, PA/Freedom) – who are playing in their final season. Cortland has three regular-season games left, all at home – Oswego next Wednesday and non-league games against William Smith (Oct. 25) and St. Lawrence (Oct. 29).
