Cortland Posts Pair of 9-1 Wins vs. Plattsburgh to Open SUNYAC Play

ITHACA, N.Y. – Cortland opened its SUNYAC schedule with a pair of 9-1 victories over Plattsburgh in a doubleheader played at Cornell University's Niemand*Robison Field. Both games were called in the fifth inning due to the eight-run rule.

Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) hit two homers in the opener, the second of which ended the game in the bottom of the fifth. Cortland improved to 9-7 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Plattsburgh dropped to 2-12 and 0-2.


GAME 1: Cortland 9, Plattsburgh 1 (5 inn.) (Box Score)

Freshman Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) threw a three-hitter for the victory in the opener and is 3-3 on the season. She struck out one, walked none and allowed one unearned run.

Kohler was one of three Red Dragons to record multiple hits. She was 2-for-2 with two homers, a walk, two RBI and three runs scored. Courtney Kadish (East Amherst) was 2-for-2 with a homer and two RBI and Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 2-for-3 with two runs. Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) also hit one of Cortland's four home runs in the game. Hibbard and Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) each drove in two runs.

For Plattsburgh, Brittany Marshall finished 1-for-2 with an RBI and Kristine Gay was 1-for-2 with a run scored.

Cortland scored three in the first on back-to-back homers by Hibbard, a two-run shot, and Kohler. Kadish led off the second with a homer to put the Red Dragons up 4-0. Plattsburgh scored in the third on Marshall's two-out RBI single, but left runners on second and third.

Cortland's four-run third inning featured a Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) RBI single, a Wolstenholme two-run double and a Kadish RBI single. The Red Dragons ended the game when Kohler's one-out homer in the fifth created the eight-run margin.


GAME 2: Cortland 9, Plattsburgh 1 (5 inn.) (Box Score)

Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) improved to 3-0 with her complete-game win. She allowed six hits, a walk and a run and struck out one in five innings. Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) led the offense by going 3-for-3 with a walk, RBI and three runs scored. Stoddard finished 2-for-2 with three RBI and Makaylee Dowd (Saratoga Springs) was 2-for-3.

Gay went 2-for-2 with an RBI for Plattsburgh. Six of the nine runs the Cardinals allowed were unearned as they committed five errors.

Cortland put runners on second and third with two outs in the first on a Cork single, a Bucci walk and a one-out flyout that allowed the runners to tag. Stoddard then reached on an infield single that drove in both runs as Bucci was able to score from second on the play.

Wolstenholme hit a two-run single in the third to extend the lead to 4-0. Gay singled in a run in the fourth for the Cardinals, but Cortland answered with two in the bottom of the inning on a Kohler bases-loaded walk and a Stoddard RBI single up the middle.

The game ended when the Red Dragons tallied three runs in the fifth. The first run scored on a Cork RBI infield single. Bucci's fielder's choice drove then drove in a run, and a throwing error on the play allowed the run that stopped the game.
