CORTLAND, N.Y. –
Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) homered twice and drove in eight runs as Cortland defeated Oswego, 12-2, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The Red Dragons completed the sweep with a 10-0 win in the nightcap and hit a combined six homers in the doubleheader. Both games were called after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
The games were originally scheduled to be played in Oswego Saturday, but were moved to Cortland Sunday due to weather and field conditions. Cortland improved to 25-13 overall and finished the SUNYAC regular season with a 14-4 league mark. The Red Dragons will be the second seed at the six-team, double-elimination SUNYAC Tournament May 1-4 at Oneonta.
GAME 1: Cortland 12, Oswego 2 (5 inn.) (Box Score)Kadish finished 3-for-3 with two homers, a single and eight RBI – the most runs batted in by a Cortland player since Carin Piacente's school-record 10 RBI versus Fredonia in April of 2003. Kadish hit a three-run homer in the second inning, a two-run single in the third and another three-run homer in the fourth.
Cortland's first three hits were all homers during a six-run second inning.
Alicia Hibbard (Canastota) led off the inning with a blast that stayed inside the left-field foul pole. Following two walks, Kadish hit a shot over the scoreboard in left center. With two outs,
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) reached on an error and
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) hit a two-run homer to center.
The Red Dragons added two in the third on Kadish's two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded. In the fourth,
Meaghan Kohler (Franklin, NJ/Warren Hills Regional) hit a one-out double and scored on a Hibbard RBI single. After a walk and a fielder's choice, Kadish lined a ball over the left-center fence to give Cortland a 12-0 lead.
Oswego's runs came on a Deanna Apps RBI double in the third and a Sammie Schroeter RBI double in the fourth.
Hibbard went 3-for-4 with two RBI, Kohler was 2-for-4 and Cork drove in two runs.
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) singled, walked twice and scored three times and
Devynn Wilder (Oswego) walked twice and scored two runs. Alexis Nasca finished 2-for-2 for the Lakers.
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) allowed five hits, one walk and two runs in four innings for the victory. She's 12-2 on the season and finished 8-1 in SUNYAC regular-season games.
Jamie Lachall (Aston, PA/Sun Valley) allowed one hit in a scoreless fifth inning. Alexandria Connelly started for Oswego but was knocked out four batters into the second inning. She gave up four runs on two hits and two walks.
GAME 2: Cortland 10, Oswego 0 (5 inn.) (Box Score)Cortland jumped out quickly with three runs in the first and four in the second and cruised to the shutout win.
Amber Corrigan (Montgomery/Valley Central) tossed four innings of three-hit ball. She struck out seven and walked two.
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) allowed two hits in the fifth.
With Cortland batting first in both games due to the move of the game location, Bucci led off the game with a triple to center and scored on Cork's single through the left side. Kohler's single and Hibbard's RBI single knocked out Oswego starter Katie Heselden. Nasca retired the next two batters, but Kadish beat out a grounder to short and
Briana Barca (Eastchester) hit an RBI single up the middle and Cortland led 3-0.
Cortland scored its first run of the second on a wild pitch, and later in the inning
Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) hit a three-run homer to left center. The Red Dragons scored in the third on a Hibbard RBI single up the middle, and their final two runs came on a Cork two-run homer – her second round-tripper of the day – in the fifth.
Bucci finished 3-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Hibbard was 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBI. Barca went 2-for-3 with a double and RBI, Kohler was 2-for-3 with two runs and Cork finished 2-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and two runs.
Katie Dobkowski ended 2-for-3 and Melissa Mulvaney went 1-for-1 with a hit-by-pitch for Oswego (9-18, 5-13 SUNYAC). Ashley Lyman reached twice on a hit-by-pitch and walk.
