#18 Red Dragons Suffer Setback at #6 Skidmore, 7-3

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. – Skidmore jumped out to a 2-0 lead less than eight minutes into the game and the nationally sixth-ranked Thoroughbreds defeated 18th-ranked Cortland, 7-3.

Dani DeGregory led the hosts – a "Final Four" team last year – with three goals. Melanie Webb added two goals and two assists, Krista Lamoreaux finished with a goal and an assist, and Jenn Hanks registered a goal and an assist. Amy Beck made two saves.

For Cortland, sophomore Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) scored twice and junior Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) finished with a goal and an assist. Senior Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) played the first half in goal and sophomore Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) played the second half. Each finished with four saves.

Coming off a 12-0 win over Castleton the previous day, Skidmore stayed hot as Lamoreaux tallied just 1:05 into the game when she tapped in a cross-crease feed from Webb. DeGregory's 10-yard shot after collecting a loose ball made it 2-0 with 7:29 elapsed in the half.

Cortland drew to within 2-1 when Vogl blasted a shot from the top of the circle off a penalty corner, assisted by senior Abigail Wentlent (Greene), 13 minutes into the contest. DeGregory answered in the 24th minute with a deflection off a long-range ball from Lamoreaux, and with 19 seconds left in the half Webb tipped in a shot by Hanks on a penalty corner and the hosts led 4-1 at the break.

The lead grew to 6-1 less than six minutes into the second half on goals by Hanks and Webb. The score stayed that way for more than 20 minutes before Stein found the cage twice 24 seconds apart with less than 10 minutes left. Freshman Victoria Dean (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) assisted on Stein's goal with 8:14 remaining and senior Emily Woods (Williamsville/Williamsville North) notched an assist on a Stein tally with 7:50 left.

The Red Dragons continued to pressure but got no closer, and DeGregory completed her hat trick with 57 seconds left to create the final margin.

Cortland will host Elmira on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
