CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomores
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and
Shelby Underwood (Marathon) and freshman
Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each tallied two goals as the nationally 18th-ranked Cortland field hockey team defeated Elmira College, 8-0, Wednesday afternoon in the home opener for the Red Dragons.

Meghan Coope (Farmingville/Sachem East) recorded a goal and an assist, senior
Abigail Wentlent (Greene) scored a goal, junior
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) and freshman
Victoria Dean (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) contributed two assists apiece and Stein and senior
Emily Woods (Williamsville/Williamsville North) each added an assist for Cortland (1-1). Senior goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) and sophomore goalie
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) split time in the cage with Perricone stopping one shot in the first half and Hourihan not facing a shot on goal in the second half. Wentlent chipped in with a second-half defensive save.
Sophomore goalie Mikayla Rebusmen (Hanncroix/Coxsackie-Athens) made 10 saves and surrendered four goals in the first half for the Soaring Eagles (0-1) before giving way to freshman Julie Hockenberger (Manlius/Fayetteville-Manlius), who stopped 12 shots and allowed four second-half goals. Senior Lauren Kirkland (Alexandria, VA/Hayfield Secondary) and freshman Samantha James (Merrimack, NH) each recorded a defensive save.
Coope opened the scoring with a deflection at the right post seven minutes, 55 seconds into the game. Wentlent made it a 2-0 game just over four minutes later with a one-time shot in front through Rebusmen's pads. Stein scored her first of the game at 16:19 when she finished off a cross from the right by Coope, and Underwood tallied her first at 21:30 with a reverse-stick shot that snuck underneath Rebusmen to give the Red Dragons a 4-0 lead at the half.
Underwood tallied her second of the game just 3:14 into the second half on a shot inside the right post. Wentlent kept the shutout intact for Cortland with 21 minutes to play, clearing a shot by Elmira freshman Atupele Machika (Machinga, Malawi/Hebron Academy) away from the goal line. Stein followed with her second score of the game less than two minutes later before Branch scored the first two goals of her career at 55:06 and 64:09, respectively, to complete the scoring for the final of 8-0. Dean assisted on both of Branch's goals.
