CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland scored three goals in the final 12 minutes to erase a 1-0 deficit and the nationally 19th-ranked Red Dragons defeated visiting Ithaca College, 3-1, in a non-league field hockey matchup. Cortland improved to 3-1 with its third straight win.
Junior
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) scored twice, including the tying goal with 11:31 remaining when she redirected in a shot by sophomore
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell). With 2:27 left, an Ithaca defender blocked a Cortland shot, but Stein collected the rebound and pounded the ball into the cage from short range to put the Red Dragons ahead. Vogl added an insurance goal with 44 seconds left when she scored off a breakaway.
Ithaca (1-3) took a 1-0 lead just over five minutes into the game. Caitlin O'Brien sent the ball from outside circle that was initially deflected into the air by a Cortland defender. The ball glanced off another Cortland player and trickled into the cage.
Despite being outshot, 16-5, and being on the short end of a 16-4 penalty corner count, Ithaca kept the 1-0 lead for more than 53 minutes. Ithaca goalie Katie Lass made six saves, three in each half.
Cortland senior goalie
Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) finished with one save in addition to clearing away a few dangerous Ithaca opportunities.
Cortland returns to action next Tuesday, Sept. 16, at Houghton College at 5 p.m.
