SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Cortland bounced back from a five-set loss to Division II St. Michael's (Vt.) to defeat Skidmore College in four sets during Day 2 of the Union College Women's Volleyball Invitational.
Cortland finished the tournament with a 1-3 record and is now 6-7 on the season. Nazareth finished with a 4-0 record on the weekend, followed by St. Michael's at 3-1.
Cortland sophomore
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) was named to the all-tournament team. She finsihed with 23 digs versus St. Michael's and 27 digs and three aces against Skidmore.
The Red Dragons opened by winning the first two sets against St. Michael's, 25-19 and 25-22, but lost the final three sets, 25-17, 25-23 and 15-11. Senior
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) knocked down 14 kills with just one error in 20 attempts for a .650 attack percentage. She also led the Red Dragons with eight blocks. Junior
Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) finished with 20 kills and six digs and freshman
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) had 15 kills and 16 digs.
Freshman
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) was also in double figures in kills with 10. Sophomore
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) registered 52 assists for more than 10 per set and added six blocks.
Cortland and Skidmore split their first two sets by 25-18 scores, with Cortland winning the opener. The Red Dragons finished off the match with 25-14 and 25-23 decisions.
Patora led the Red Dragons with 15 kills and five aces and May tallied a .353 attack percentage with 14 kills and two errors in 34 attempts. Kelly finished with nine kills, six blocks and a .389 attack percentage and Roberts totaled 43 assists. Freshman Ashley Ruggierio (Smithtown/Smithtown East) was second on the team with 18 digs and Patora had 12 digs.
Cortland returns to action next Friday and Saturday, Sept. 19-20, at the Juniata Invitational. The Red Dragons will play 13th-ranked Christopher Newport along with Franklin and Marshall on Friday, then Salisbury and eighth-ranked Juniata Saturday.
