HUNTINGDON, PA. – Cortland lost to nationally 12th-ranked Christopher Newport University and to Franklin & Marshall College during the opening day of competition at the Juniata College ASICS Invitational.
The Red Dragons (6-9) will face Salisbury University at 11 a.m. and sixth-ranked Juniata at 5 p.m. during Day 2 of the tournament Saturday.
Christopher Newport, now 13-1 after beating Juniata Friday night, defeated Cortland 25-17, 25-9, 25-16. The Red Dragons were led in defeat by
Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) with seven kills and a .294 attack percentage.
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) and
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had four kills each, with Patora also recording six digs.
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 15 assists and seven digs and
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) added six digs.
Cortland was then swept by Franklin & Marshall (9-4) by set scores of 25-11, 25-12 and 25-11.
Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) registered five kills.
Victoria Grix (Pearl River) and
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had six digs apiece and
Mary Kelly (Guilderland) tallied two blocks.
