Red Dragons Lose to Salisbury and #6 Juniata to Conclude ASICS Tourney

HUNTINGDON, PA. - The Cortland women's volleyball team lost in three sets to both Salisbury and nationally sixth-ranked Juniata during the second day of Juniata's ASICS Invitational.

The Red Dragons (6-11) fell to Salisbury (12-4) 25-15, 25-20, 25-17 and to the host Eagles (12-2) 25-20, 25-17, 25-12. Cortland finished 0-4 at the tournament, including two setbacks to ranked teams.

Senior Mary Kelly (Guilderland) led Cortland versus Salisbury with six kills and finished with two blocks and a .286 attack percentage. Junior Kayla Pollock (Massapequa) also had six kills and sophomore Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) finished with 19 assists. Sophomore Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) posted a team-high 12 digs and freshman Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) had three blocks.

Kelly registered six kills and no errors in nine attempts for a .667 attack percentage and added a team-high four blocks versus Juniata. Junior Sydney Hayward (Trumansburg) totaled five kills and three blocks and Roberts had 19 assists. McGuirk and freshman Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) finished with nine and eight digs, respectively.

Cortland led the first set, 15-12, before a Juniata 7-1 run made it a 19-16 advantage for the hosts. Cortland fought back to within 19-18 but surrendered the next five points. Cortland was also within 11-10 in the second set before the Eagles mounted a 6-0 run.

Cortland begins SUNYAC play next Friday and Saturday at Oneonta. The Red Dragons face Potsdam Friday at 5 p.m. and will play Oneonta and New Paltz on Saturday at 10 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.
