#20 Red Dragons Lose Heartbreaker to #8 Montclair St., 3-2, in OT

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Junior Maura Johnston (Montville, NJ) scored one minute, 15 seconds into overtime to lift the nationally eighth-ranked Montclair St. field hockey team to a 3-2 win over 20th-ranked Cortland Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex in non-conference action. The Red Dragons fell to 4-2 with the setback, while the Red Hawks improved to 6-1.

Sophomore Shelby Underwood (Marathon) tallied both of Cortland's goals on unassisted efforts. Senior goalie Amanda Perricone (Bedminster, PA/Pennridge) made six saves for the Red Dragons, and senior Abigail Wentlent (Greene) recorded two defensive saves.

Sophomore Gianna Moglino (Holmdel, NJ) paced Montclair St. with one goal and one assist, and senior Joelle Butrico (South Plainfield, NJ) also added a goal. Junior goalie Rebecca Brattole (Clark, NJ/Arthur L. Johnson) turned aside five shots.

The first half was a tightly played 35 minutes with the teams combining for just seven shots. The lone goal of the half came at 30:18 when Moglino scored on a long blast through traffic off a loose ball.

Play opened up in the second half. Cortland knotted the game at 1-1 just 1:32 after intermission. Underwood forced a turnover at the top of the circle, carried to the left side and sent a shot inside the right post for her fourth goal of the season. Montclair St. nearly siezed the lead with 16 minutes to play with a four-shot flurry, but Perricone stopped the first three and Wentlent denied senior Abby Erler's (New Hampton, NH/Newfound Regional) rebound bid at the goal line.

The Red Hawks did regain the advantage at 57:08 on a penalty corner. Moglino fed a pass to the left of the circle where Butrico put a shot through Perricone's pads with Johnston screening on the play. The Red Dragons wasted little time in evening the score again. Just 2:01 later, Brattole made a save on junior Brenna Couture's (Red Hook) diving shot in front, and Underwood flipped the rebound over the sprawled goalkeeper to make it a 2-2 game.

Both teams had chances to grab the win in regulation down the stretch. With just under five minutes to play, Johnston broke in alone on Perricone and made a move to her right, but Wentlent prevented her second goal with a defensive save on a high shot. Then, with no time on the clock and working off a penalty corner, Cortland junior Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) and sophomore Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) each were denied by Brattole to send the game to overtime.

In the extra session, the Red Hawks earned the win on the lone shot by either team. Erler sent a long pass into the circle where Johnston gained control and deposited an eight-yard shot inside the right post for the game-winner.
