GENESEO, N.Y. – Geneseo broke open a tight game with a 15-0 run early in the second half and the host Knights defeated Cortland, 77-63.
Gordon Lyons led Geneseo (7-4, 3-1 SUNYAC) with 20 points and 11 rebounds. He made all five of his shots from the field and was 10-of-14 from the foul line. Andy Drescher added 17 points and three assists and Kevin Crockett scored 14 points. James McKenna totaled 10 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three blocks and Connor Rogers finished with 10 points as five Geneseo players scored in double figures.
Cortland (8-3, 2-3 SUNYAC) was led by
Lamard Herron's (Westbury) 17 points.
Blair Estarfaa (Buffalo/Maryvale) added 11 points and
T.J. Hefele (Greenlawn/Friends Academy) chipped in with eight points.
Grequan Carter (Queens/Humanities & The Arts) led the Red Dragons with three assists and shared the team lead with Herron with four rebounds.
Neither team led by more than six points in the first half and Geneseo led 34-32 at intermission. Cortland grabbed its final lead at 38-36 on two Herron free throws with 17:45 left.
The Knights started their decisive rally with a Rogers basket and a Lyons 3-point play. After Crockett hit a shot, Drescher sank a 3-pointer, followed about two minutes later by a Crockett trey, and Lyons closed the run with a layup at the 12:49 mark to put Geneseo up 51-38.
Cortland drew within single digits only once the rest of the way at 65-56 on an Estarfaa 3-pointer with 3:50 left. Rogers answered with a layup 17 seconds later and the margin was at least 10 after that. Geneseo finished the game 54 percent from the field, including 60 percent (12-of-20) in the second half. The Red Dragons were held to 35 percent shooting overall and 5-of-23 (22 percent) from the 3-point arc.
Cortland will travel to Potsdam Friday at 5:30 p.m. and Plattsburgh Saturday at 2 p.m. for a pair of league contests.
