Cortland Sweeps Hunter and Utica to Open Play at Elmira Invitational

ELMIRA, N.Y. - Cortland opened play at the Elmira College Women's Volleyball Invitational with three-set wins over Hunter College and Utica College. The Red Dragons (13-13) will conclude tournament play Saturday versus Elmira at 10 a.m. and Wilkes at 4 p.m.

Cortland defeated Hunter, 25-23, 25-21, 25-16, behind eight kills apiece from Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) and Nicole Silberer (Centereach), and seven kills each from Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker), Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) and Courtney Silberer (Centereach).

Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) totaled 34 assists, while May and Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) led the team with four aces each. McGuirk also led the Red Dragons with 18 digs, followed by Czeczotka with 11, and May registered three blocks.

Julia Connolly led Hunter (12-11) with 12 kills and Miranda Hogan distributed 32 assists.

The Silberer sisters led Cortland with 12 kills each in its 25-13, 25-19, 25-11 win over Utica. Courtney had two errors in 19 attempts for a .526 attack percentage, while Nicole had no errors in 26 attempts for a .462 attack percentage. Patora added 10 kills, followed by Czeczotka with seven and May with six.

Roberts dished out 39 assists for a 13 assist-per-set average. McGuirk and Czeczotka paced the team with 16 and 10 digs, respectively.

Nicole Herringshaw and Hannah Voss led Utica (4-22) with six kills apiece. Voss also had 16 digs.
