Red Dragons Complete Perfect SUNYAC Slate With 5-2 "Dragon Sword" Win at Oswego

OSWEGO, N.Y.  - Five Cortland players scored goals as the Red Dragons completed a perfect SUNYAC regular-season schedule with a 5-2 victory at Oswego. The game was the 16th annual "Dragon Sword" game between the two programs.

Cortland finished its league schedule with a 6-0 mark and is 11-4 overall. Oswego fell to 3-8 overall and 2-3 in the SUNYAC. Cortland will be the top seed in the four-team conference tournament and will host an opponent to be determined in the semifinals Nov. 4.

Junior Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) led Cortland with a goal and an assist and now has 99 career points (44 goals, 11 assists). Freshman Jessica Welsh (Hamilton), senior Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia), senior Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) each scored once, and freshman Victoria Ospina (Accord/Rondout Valley) and sophomore Victoria Dean (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) notched one assist apiece.

Freshman Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) started in goal for Cortland. She made two saves and did not allow any goals in 62 minutes, 38 seconds. Junior Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland) did not register any saves over the final 7:22.

Bri Sturdevant and Jordan Sheehy each scored goals, both assisted by Grace Rinaldi, for the host Lakers. Starting goalie Sarita Charap made 10 saves and gave up three goals in 62:08. Grace Lombardi played 7:52 in cage and recorded four saves. Cortland finished with a 24-4 advantage in shots and a 17-1 edge in penalty corners.

The game was scoreless until Vogl scored off a Stein assist in the 28th minute to put Cortland on top. O'Brien's unassisted goal, off a rebound, about five minutes later gave the Red Dragons a 2-0 halftime lead.

The lead grew to 3-0 less than eight minutes into the second half when Welsh scored after Charap turned aside three straight shots by O'Brien. Murphy converted an Ospina pass in the 63rd minute to extend the lead to 4-0.

Oswego got on the board in the 64th minute when Rinaldi's crossing pass set up Sturdevant. The Red Dragons answered just over a minute later on Stein's goal, assisted by Dean, and Oswego closed the scoring with 4:03 remaining when Sheehy tallied off a Rinaldi cross.

Cortland will play at St. Lawrence on Wednesday, Oct. 28, at 4 p.m. and will host Union on Saturday, Oct. 31, at 1 p.m. on Senior Day.
