CANTON, N.Y. - Freshman Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) scored twice in less than a six-minute span to lead the Cortland field hockey team to a 2-1 victory at St. Lawrence Wednesday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 12-4 with the win, while the Saints dropped to 4-11.

Freshman goalie Kailynne Reinohl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made four saves for Cortland. Maisie Rosenheimer tallied St. Lawrence's goal with Caroline Phinney collecting an assist. Goalie Kim Haab stopped 11 shots.

After a scoreless first half in which the teams combined for just nine shots -- six for Cortland and three for St. Lawrence -- the Saints took a 1-0 lead at 56:24 when Rosenheimer scored off a penalty corner.

The lead lasted just 19 seconds as Welsh rushed down the field on a break and tallied her 11th goal of the season. Then with 7:44 remaining in the game, she scored the game winner, her team-high sixth of the season, when she took a pass, cut into the circle and sent a shot inside the right post through traffic. The Red Dragons controlled play for the remainder of the game to hold onto the victory.

Cortland outshot St. Lawrence, 27-8, including 21-5 in the second half, and held a commanding 18-3 advantage in penalty corners in the game. The Red Dragons wrap up their regular season at home on Saturday with a non-conference game versus Union at 1 p.m. before hosting Oneonta in a SUNYAC Semifinal game next Wednesday.
