SELINSGROVE, PA. – Sophomore
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led the Cortland women's volleyball team with 13 kills and two blocks in the Red Dragons' four-set, non-league loss at Susquehanna University. Cortland lost the first two sets, 25-21 and 25-16, rallied to win the third set, 25-23, but had a rally fall short in a 25-22 loss in the fourth set.
Cortland (17-16) was also originally scheduled to play Johns Hopkins at Susquehanna, but that match was canceled due to injuries on Johns Hopkins' roster. Cortland will wrap up the regular season with two matches Saturday at Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania. The Red Dragons will face Alvernia at 12 p.m. and the host Blue Jays at 2 p.m.
Sophomores
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) and
Nicole Silberer (Centereach) each added seven kills and two blocks and sophomore
Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) finished with six kills and two blocks for Cortland. Junior
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) led the team with 14 digs and three aces.
Also for the Red Dragons, junior
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) dished out 30 assists, while junior
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) and sophomore
Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) contributed 12 digs each.
Susquehanna (23-9) was led by Erin Byrne's 16 kills. Leana Corvin added 14 kills, Morgan Whiteman had six aces and nine kills, and Maggie O'Hearn tallied 50 assists.
The opening set was tied 11 times, the last at 19-19, before the hosts scored twice on a service error and an attack error. Cortland eventually was within 22-21 before the Crusaders scored the last three points on kills by Whiteman and O'Hearn and a Whiteman ace. Cortland led 9-4 in the second set, but Susquehanna used a 7-0 run to take the lead. The Red Dragons were still close, trailing 18-16, before the Crusaders used another 7-0 run to win the set.
Cortland trailed 15-8 in the third set and was on the verge of being swept, but the Red Dragons rallied for the win. McGuirk's kill tied the set at 21-21, and two
Courtney Silberer kills put Cortland up 23-21. Silberer also notched a kill for set point.
Cortland led 13-12 in the fourth, but Corvin's two kills highlighted a 5-0 run that gave Susquehanna a 17-13 lead. The Red Dragons trailed 20-14, but fought back again with a 6-0 streak that tied the set at 20-20. With the score 21-21, Susquehanna scored twice to take the lead for good. May's kill made it a one-point deficit, but the hosts scored the last two points on a Tara Mahoney kill and a Cortland error.
