Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

#3 Red Dragons Silence #1 Bullets, 14-10, on the Road

GETTYSBURG, PA. – The nationally third-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team scored five of the game's final six goals to break a 9-9 tie and earned a 14-10 win at top-ranked Gettysburg on the road Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons improved to 2-0 with the win, their second in two seasons against the nation's number-one ranked team, while the Bullets fell to 4-1.

Junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led Cortland with four goals and one assist. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and juniors Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) and Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) each tallied three goals and one assist. With her four points, Monaghan eclipsed 100 for her career.

Freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) tallied a goal, and sophomores Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) and Kaitlin Antelmi (Bridgeport/Chittenango) recorded one assist apiece for the Red Dragons. Junior goalie Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) made five saves. Hayes-Hurley secured a game-high eight draw controls as Cortland dominated the statistic, 17-9, in the game. Monaghan and Gentile each won four draws, while Monaghan scooped up five ground balls and junior Colleen Wright (Huntington Station/Huntington) added three.

Bridget Kenny netted a game-high five goals for Gettysburg. Mandy Buell recorded two goals and one assist, Abby Baigelman, Maggie Connolly and Amanda Borucki each netted a goal and Katie Landry totaled five assists. Goalie Shannon Keeler turned aside two shots and collected three ground balls. Kenny won three draws.

The Bullets steadily built a 4-0 lead just past the midway point of the first half as Kenny scored twice and Buell picked up a goal and an assist. The Red Dragons responded with a four-goal run in less than a three-minute span to pull even at 4-4. Four different players found the back of the net. Kenny and Buell wrapped goals around Elmer's score and Gettysburg led, 6-5, at the half.

After Kenny notched her fourth goal of the game to open the scoring in the second half to increase the Bullets' advantage to 7-5, Hayes-Hurley, Gentile and Monaghan each scored in less than a two-minute span to give Cortland its first lead of the game at 8-7. Baigelman and Borucki then sandwiched goals around Monaghan's third of the game, and the game stood tied at 9-9 with 15:33 to play.

From that point, the Red Dragons seized control of the game as Bennett and Gentile each netted two goals to give Cortland a 13-9 lead with 3:13 remaining. Kenny's fifth goal stopped the four-goal Cortland burst, but Hayes-Hurley sealed the victory with her third goal at the 1:58 mark.
