Cortland on Both Sides of Shutouts in Win vs. Centenary and Loss to Ramapo

WINTER HAVEN, FLA. – Senior Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) threw a two-hit shutout as Cortland defeated Centenary College (N.J.), 5-0, to open Thursday's action at the Rebel Spring Games. The Red Dragons, however, lost 6-0 to Ramapo in the following contest.

Cortland (4-6) will complete its Florida trip with games Friday versus Springfield at 10 a.m. and St. Norbert at 12:15 p.m.

Cortland 5, Centenary 0 (Box Score)

Salamone improved to 2-1 with the shutout that featured nine strikeouts and only one walk. She retired the first nine batters before allowing a leadoff single to Heather Passaro in the fourth. Passaro was eventually stranded at third base. Salamone also walked Samantha Darling with one one in the sixth and gave up a Becca Raymond leadoff single in the seventh.

Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) finished 3-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored to lead Cortland's nine-hit attack. Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) went 2-for-3 with a double, walk and RBI and Courtney Kadish (East Amherst/Williamsville North) finished 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI.

Cortland scored in the bottom of the first when Bucci led off with a bunt single, took second on a groundout, moved to third on a Barbato infield single and scored on an RBI single by Devynn Wilder (Oswego). Bucci and Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) each hit RBI singles in the second to give the Red Dragons a 3-0 advantage.

With two outs in the fourth, Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro) singled, stole second and scored on a Kadish RBI single to right. The Red Dragons tallied their final run in the fourth. Bucci singled and got caught in a rundown after rounding too far past first, but was able to dive into second safely. Two batters later, Barbato hit a deep double over the center fielder's head to drive home Bucci.

Centenary (1-6) starter Kylie Morgan allowed nine hits and three walks and was charged with five runs, four earned, in six innings. She fanned one batter.

Ramapo 6, Cortland 0 (Box Score)

Ramapo (7-3) won behind a three-hit shutout from Katrina Buczkowski. She struck out three, walked none, and used an effective riseball to record 15 of 21 outs in the air. Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started for Cortland and gave up five hits and five runs over two and two thirds. She walked three. Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) pitched the final three and a third innings and permitted one hit and one walk, struck out one, and was charged with one run.

All of the Roadrunners' six runs came in the third inning. With one out, Kim LaPenta and Melanie Walling hit back-to-back singles and Melissa Moreno walked to load the bases. Danielle Saporito flied out to left for a sacrifice fly to give Ramapo a 1-0 lead.

Ally Spellman singled to re-load the bases and Grace Brenna doubled down the left-field line to plate two runs. Lachall entered in relief and walked Taylor May. Jaclyn Lima then hit a liner to center that Bucci attempted to make a sliding catch on, but the ball got by for a bases-clearing, three-run double.

Cortland's baserunners came on a two-out single by Barbato in the first, a leadoff single by Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) in the fifth and a one-out single by Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) in the seventh, but the Red Dragons were not able to get a runner past second base.

Walling finished 2-for-2, Lima was 1-for-3 with a double and three RBI and Brennan went 1-for-3 with a double and two RBI for Ramapo.
