#5 Red Dragons Defeat Bears, 19-5, with Balanced Scoring

POTSDAM, N.Y. – Nine different players scored at least one goal as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team posted a 19-5 win over Potsdam in SUNYAC action Tuesday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 7-1 overall and 2-0 in the conference, while the Bears fell to 1-7 and 0-2.

Junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) led Cortland with four goals. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurly (Huntington) and junior Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) each tallied three goals and one assist, and junior Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) netted a career-best three goals. Sophomore Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) scored a game-high five points on two goals and three assists.

Junior Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) and freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) recorded one goal and two assists apiece, and freshman Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) and Madison Kandoth (Chestnut Ridge/Albertus Magnus) each scored her first career goal for the Red Dragons. Senior Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in with an assist.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) raised her record to 4-0 on the season for Cortland, stopping four shots in the first half. Junior Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) did not register a save while playing the second half. Hayes-Hurley pulled down a game-high nine draw controls and collected three ground balls, and Gentile secured six draws. Monaghan caused four turnovers, while senior Melissa Halstead (Miller Place) and sophomore Allyson McNerney (Tully) each scooped up three ground balls.

Five different players scored a goal for the Bears, led by Bri McClusky who recorded one goal and one assist. Emily Petit, Michaela Cole, Margaret Wall and Murphy Newman each netted a goal and Alyssa Ferenczy contributed an assist. Goalie Devan Olschewske made 11 saves. Bailey Weigel won six draws, and Petit recorded four ground balls and forced four turnovers.

The Red Dragons took control of the game with a 9-0 run in the first 13:59 of the contest. Bello, Hayes-Hurley, Gentile and Monaghan each scored twice during the streak. Newman put the Bears on the scoreboard at 14:58 before Cortland closed the half with three of the final four goals for a 13-2 lead.

Potsdam tallied the first two goals of the second half to make it a 13-4 game, but Elmer scored once and Gentile netted back-to-back goals to push Cortland's lead to 16-4 with 12:40 remaining. Petit scored for Potsdam with 8:45 to play, and the Red Dragons closed out the scoring with goals from Bello, Kandoth and Monaghan in the last four minutes for the 19-5 final.
