CORTLAND, N.Y. – Ten different players tallied at least one goal as the nationally fifth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team improved to 11-1 overall and 5-0 in SUNYAC play with a 17-1 conference victory versus Oswego Saturday afternoon at the Stadium Complex.
Senior
Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) paced the Red Dragons on offense with four goals and one assist. Sophomore
Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) scored three times, junior
Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) recorded two goals and two assists and junior
Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) tallied two goals and one assist.
Senior
Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) scored four points on one goal and three assists, juniors
Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) and
Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each contributed one goal and one assist and junior
Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) and freshmen
Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) and
Katie Wolfe (East Amherst/Williamsville North) netted one goal apiece.
Sophomore goalie
Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made two saves for Cortland and did not allow a goal in 46:42. Junior goalie
Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's) played the final 13:18 and stopped one shot. Hayes-Hurley surpassed the century mark on the season with her game-high eight draw controls and added three ground balls and three caused turnovers. Monaghan registered three ground balls and three caused turnovers as well, while Ohberg and Gentile each collected four ground balls.
Junior Erannan Shattuck (Syracuse/Bishop Grimes) scored for the Lakers (4-8, 0-5 SUNYAC). Senior Miranda Czechowski (West Seneca/West Seneca East) paced Oswego with four caused turnovers. Freshman goalie Angela Ponto (Syracuse/West Genesee) registered nine saves, three ground balls and three caused turnovers.
The Red Dragons took control of the game early, building a 10-0 lead before the midway point of the first half. Hayes-Hurley scored three of her goals during the run. The advantage grew to 14-0 at the half on goals from Bennett and Hayes-Hurley and a pair of scores from Ohberg.
The second half featured much deliberate play and a total of 19 turnovers, 10 by Oswego and nine from Cortland. Wolfe made it 15-0 at 21:42 before Bennett netted her second of the game at 13:39. Shattuck put the Lakers on the scoreboard at 8:33, and LaComb completed the scoring with her first of the season at 2:23.
Cortland hosts 10th-ranked Tufts University in non-conference action Sunday at 1 p.m.
