Gentile Not So Gentle on Brockport in 19-10 Win

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) scored a career-high nine goals, the most by a Cortland player in 14 years, to lead the nationally fourth-ranked Red Dragons to a 19-10 win at The College at Brockport in SUNYAC women's lacrosse action Tuesday night. Cortland improved to 13-1 overall and 6-0 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles fell to 7-4 and 3-2.

Freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) also had a career day for the Red Dragons with a personal-best five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and junior Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) each netted three goals. Sophomore Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) tallied one goal and two assists, junior Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) recorded one goal and one assist, senior Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in with two assists and junior Elise Bennett (Webster/Webster Thomas) added one assist.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) registered a career-high 11 saves for the Red Dragons. Hayes-Hurley won seven draw controls, and Gentile secured six draws.

Kelly Wall led Brockport with three goals and one assist. Makensie Schuber and Nina Tassone each scored three goals, and Keeley Rice added a goal. Goalie Remle Harr turned aside nine shots. Courtney Szczesniak recorded three caused turnovers and three ground balls, and Colleen Hathaway also forced three turnovers.

Gentile started the game quickly, giving Cortland a 3-0 lead 5:24 into the game. The advantage grew to 10-2 at the 3:43 mark of the opening half as Gentile notched three more goals. The Golden Eagles pulled to within 10-4 at intermission with late scores from Tassone and Wall.

The Red Dragons opened the second half with a four-goal run to open a commanding 14-4 lead. Brockport netted the next two goals to pull to within 14-6, but the eight-goal deficit would be the closest the Golden Eagles could get the remainder of the game. Gentile and Monaghan pushed the Cortland advantage back to 10 at 16-6 before the teams traded the next four goals for an 18-8 Red Dragon lead with 6:37 remaining. Tassone and Rice tallied back-to-back goals for Brockport inside the five-minute mark, and Gentile completed the scoring with her ninth goal of the game at 2:10 off Farrell's assist for the 19-10 final.
