Cortland Defeats New Paltz, 21-4; Secures SUNYAC Regular-Season Title

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Senior Emma Hayes-Hurley (Huntington) and junior Ashley Gentile (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) each tallied six goals to lead the nationally fourth-ranked Cortland women's lacrosse team to a 21-4 win at New Paltz Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action. With the win, the Red Dragons improved to 14-1 overall and 7-0 in the conference and secured the top seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament. The Hawks fell to 3-9 and 1-5.

Junior Tara Monaghan (Stony Point/North Rockland) added four goals for Cortland. Juniors Nicole Bello (Camillus/West Genesee) and Elizabeth LaComb (Syracuse/West Genesee) each notched two goals, and sophomore Allyson McNerney (Tully) scored a goal. Sophomore Kristen Ohberg (Brewster) recorded three assists, and senior Marilyn Farrell (Fayetteville/Fayetteville-Manlius) and freshman Hannah Elmer (Syracuse/West Genesee) chipped in with two assists apiece.

Sophomore goalie Jaclyn Beshlian (Wantagh) made one save in 45:25 before giving way to junior Liz Ingalls (Centerport/St. Anthony's), who did not stop a shot over the final 14:35. Hayes-Hurley won eight draw controls, caused two turnovers and collected three ground balls. Gentile added four draws and four ground balls, and Monaghan contributed four draws.

Lianne Valdiva, Julia Johnson, Jackie Wilkom and Kelsey Healy each netted an unassisted goal for New Paltz. Goalie Jackie Ulanoff stopped 11 shots and scooped up three ground balls, while Valdivia won three draws.

Cortland took control of the game by building a 7-0 lead midway through the first half as Hayes-Hurley and Gentile each netted three goals. The lead grew to 11-1 at the half with Hayes-Hurley connecting for two more scores. Cortland continued to build on its lead, pushing the score to 17-4 with 12:04 remaining before finishing off the scoring with four consecutive goals for the 21-4 final.

The Red Dragons have clinched the SUNYAC regular-season title with one game remaining as they hold the tiebreaker on Fredonia having defeated the Blue Devils earlier in the season.
