Cortland Earns Split at Geneseo After Seventh-Inning Rally

GENESEO, N.Y. – Cortland scored four runs in the top of the seventh inning after trailing 2-0 and the Red Dragons defeated Geneseo, 4-2, to win the second game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. The victory allowed Cortland to salvage a split of its SUNYAC-opening twinbill as the host Knights won the opener in eight innings, 4-3.

Cortland (9-7, 1-1 SUNYAC) is scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday at Brockport, but that may change based on field conditions at Brockport. Cortland and Geneseo were originally scheduled to play Saturday, but the doubleheader was moved to Thursday due to a poor weather forecast.

GAME 1: Geneseo 4, Cortland 3 (8 inn.) (Box Score)

Geneseo registered a walk-off win in the opener on Cat Krok's one-out, bases-loaded infield single in the bottom of the eighth. Courtney Budynas led off the inning with a single and pinch runner Alyssa Presutti advanced to second on a Kayleigh Blersch sac bunt. Emily Martin's single moved Presutti to third, with Martin taking second on the play, and Cortland elected to intentionally walk Mikayla Moore. Krok followed with the winning hit to shortstop.

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the second. Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) led off with a double, and with one out Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) singled. On the play, Wolstenholme scored as Geneseo threw out Stoddard trying to take second.

Geneseo scored single runs in the second, third and fourth innings, all unearned, versus Cortland starter Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse). Moore singled with two outs in the second and eventually scored on an error. Sami Brown reached on a two-out bunt single in the third, moved to third on an error and scored on a passed ball, while in the fourth Blersch reached on a leadoff error and scored with two outs on Krok's RBI single.

Cortland left runners on second and third in the fourth, but broke through to tie the game in the top of the fifth. After a one-out error, Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) walked and Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) singled to load the bases. A fielder's choice resulted in a force at home for the second out but Wolstenholme and Devynn Wilder (Oswego) followed with bases-loaded walks to knot the game at 3-3.

The Red Dragons squandered a chance in the sixth after a Makaylee Dowd (Saratoga Springs) leadoff double, while Geneseo put runners on first and second with two outs in the sixth but couldn't score.

Moore was 2-for-3 with a walk and Krok finished 2-for-4 with two RBI for Geneseo. Corrin Spallone went the distance for the win, allowing nine hits and three runs, one earned, in eight innings. She fanned five and walked three.

Salamone allowed three hits and no walks and struck out two in her four innings in the circle. Katie Pitkin (Brownville/General Brown) pitched the next three frames, and she allowed Geneseo's leadoff single in the eighth to be charged with the loss. Wolstenholme was 2-for-3 with a walk and RBI and Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) finished 2-for-4.

GAME 2: Cortland 4, Geneseo 2 (Box Score)

Geneseo scored twice in the bottom of the fifth on a Brown RBI groundout and a Claire VanNewkirk pinch-hit RBI single, and the Knights took that 2-0 lead into the top of seventh in search of their first sweep of Cortland since 2002.

The Red Dragons, however, started their go-ahead rally with an Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro) pinch-hit, leadoff walk. She moved to second on a groundout, and Kaleigh Churchill (Camillus/West Genesee) singled to center to put runners on first and third.

Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) grounded out to third for the second out, scoring Schoonmaker and advancing pinch runner Alissa DePadua (Milford, PA/Delaware Valley) to second. Bucci kept the inning alive with an infield single that pushed DePadua to third, and Cork tied the game with an RBI single to right. Barbato followed with a two-run double to right center and Cortland led 4-2.

Kirstyn Alonzo (Mechanicville) earned the victory with two and a third innings of hitless relief. She allowed only one baserunner on a two-out walk in the seventh. Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) started for the Red Dragons and gave up two runs on six hits in four and two thirds innings. She struck out two and walked two.

Moore pitched a complete game for Geneseo (4-9, 1-3 SUNYAC). She allowed only one hit over the first six innings and finished with five hits and four walks against her. She struck out three. Moore pitched out of a second-and-third jam with two outs in the fifth by getting an inning-ending flyout.

For Cortland, Cork finished 1-for-2 with two walks and an RBI. Bucci and Churchill each went 1-for-3. Presutti and Holly Drasser paced the Knights, each finishing 2-for-3.
