BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Junior
Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) hit a three-run homer and finished with four RBI as Cortland defeated host Brockport, 4-2, in the opening game of a SUNYAC doubleheader. Cork also went 2-for-2 with two walks, three runs and an RBI as the Red Dragons completed the sweep with a 9-1 victory in five innings.
Cortland (11-7, 3-1 SUNYAC) is scheduled to host New Paltz on Tuesday, April 7, at 3 p.m. in a SUNYAC twinbill.
GAME 1: Cortland 4, Brockport 2 (Box Score)Cortland took a 3-0 lead in the third on a pair of errors and Cork's three-run round-tripper. The Golden Eagles got two runs back in the fourth on a Kelly Proper leadoff homer and a Delaney Buckley one-out RBI double, but
Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) entered in relief and retired the next two hitters to avoid further damage.
The Red Dragons tallied an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Pinch hitter
Andrea Schoonmaker (Poughkeepsie/Marlboro) led off with a single and was bunted to second by
Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy). Phillips was safe on the play due to an error.
Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) sacrificed the runners to second and third and Cork hit a sac fly to left to score Schoonmaker.
Flint earned the win with three and two thirds innings of two-hit scoreless ball. She struck out one and walked none and improved to 2-3.
Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) started and gave up five hits and two runs in three and a third innings. She fanned three and walked one. Salamone did not pitch the four innings required to earn the win as a starter. Cork finished 1-for-2 with a walk, run and four RBI.
Brockport's Korey Kibling threw a complete game with four hits and two walks. She struck out two, and only one of the four runs she allowed was earned. Brianna Ferchen finished 2-for-4.
GAME 2: Cortland 9, Brockport 1 (5 inn.) (Box Score)Cortland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the first and added four in the third to go up 7-0. The Red Dragons tacked on two runs in the fifth and, despite a Brockport run in the bottom of the frame, won the game after five innings due to the eight-run rule.
Cortland's first inning featured a
Niki Barbato (East Meadow/Holy Trinity) RBI groundout and back-to-back RBI doubles by
Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) and
Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem). The Red Dragons picked up their four runs in the third on an error, a Barbato two-run single and a Wolstenholme sacrifice fly.
In the fifth, pinch hitter
Corrie Colf (Clarence) led off with a walk and scored two batters later on Cork's RBI triple. Cork scored on a passed ball, and she finished the doubleheader a combined 3-for-4 with a homer, triple, two walks, four runs and five RBI.
Proper singled in a run for Brockport in the bottom of the fifth. Brianna Harris finished 2-for-3 and Proper was 1-for-2 with a walk.
Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) threw all five innings for Cortland and is 4-2 with the win. She scattered six hits, walked one and struck out three. Bucci was 2-for-4 with two steals and two runs and Wolstenholme drove in a pair of runs. Jaime Berger started for Brockport and allowed seven runs, five earned, in three innings.
