Cortland Scores 18 Runs in Sweep at 22nd-Ranked Rochester

ROCHESTER, N.Y. – Erin Wolstenholme (Oneonta) homered and drove in four runs and Sarah Salamone (Liverpool/Cicero-North Syracuse) allowed two runs over four innings as Cortland defeated nationally 22nd-ranked Rochester, 10-2 in five innings, in the first game of a non-league doubleheder. The Red Dragons won 8-1 in the nightcap as Jamie Lachall (Philadelphia, PA/Sun Valley) threw a complete-game five-hitter and Mikayla Shade (Bethlehem) drove in three runs.

GAME 1: Cortland 10, Rochester 2 (5 inn.) (Box Score)

Cortland took a 1-0 lead in the first on a Shade sac fly, then exploded for six runs in the second to go up 7-0. Rosie Phillips (Geneva/Our Lady of Mercy) singled in a run, followed by a Jamie Bucci (Tarrytown/Sleepy Hollow) RBI double and a Diane Cork (Wayland/Wayland-Cohocton) RBI fielder's choice. Wolstenholme clubbed a three-run homer two batters later.

Rochester got on the board when Alyssa Murillo hit a solo homer in the second. The teams traded runs in the fourth. Carrie Stoddard (Liverpool) hit a two-out double and scored on Devynn Wilder's (Oswego) RBI triple, while Murillo led off with a double for the Yellowjackets and scored on Ashley Amidon's pinch-hit RBI single.

The Red Dragons scored two runs in the fifth that created the eight-run margin and the eventual early end of the game. Phillips led off with her third single of the game and Bucci and Cork each walked. Two batters later, Wolstenholme walked to force in a run, and Shade brought in the final run with a groundout to second.

Salamone, now 3-1, gave up seven hits and one walk and fanned two. Alexandrea Flint (Dalton/Keshequa) allowed one hit in the fifth. Phillips was 3-for-3 with an RBI and run scored and Wolstenholme went 1-for-3 with a walk, run and four RBI. Cork finished 1-for-2 with two walks, an RBI and three runs, Wilder went 1-for-2 with a walk, RBI and run, and Bucci finished 1-for-3 with a walk, two runs and RBI.

Brittany Grage suffered the loss after being tagged for four runs on three hits in one-plus innings. Murillo was 2-for-2 with an RBI and two runs and Gabriela Alatorre finished 2-for-2.

Tiffany White's RBI single drew the hosts within 3-1 in the second, and it stayed that way until the fifth when Cortland posted three runs. Shade and Phillips hit run-scoring singles in that frame, with another run scoring on a wild pitch.
