Welsh Provides the Offense in 2-1 Comeback Win vs. St. John Fisher

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman forward Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) scored a pair of first-half goals as Cortland erased an early deficit to defeat visiting St. John Fisher, 2-1, in a non-league contest.

Welsh tied the game in the 14th minute on a one-timer from the right side off an assist from senior Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia). She tallied again in the 26th minute, also off a Vogl assist, with a reverse stick shot that just trickled into the cage. Welsh's two goals came on her only two shots of the contest.

The Cardinals (3-2) jumped out to a 1-0 lead just 3:34 into the game on a penalty corner play that resulted in a one-timer by Nickole Morgan that found its way inside the left post. Elizabeth Cusack assisted on the play. Cortland defender Alexa Sanzone (Rome/Rome Free Academy) had prevented a goal about 30 seconds earlier with a defensive save, but a penalty corner followed that led to the Fisher goal.

Cortland freshman goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made six saves, while Fisher goalkeeper Danielle Famolaro recorded seven saves. Two of Reinoehl's saves came in a quick sequence with just over four minutes remaining to preserve the lead. Cortland held a slight 12-11 advantage in shots, but the Cardinals earned nine penalty corners to the Red Dragons' six.

Cortland, which is the highest team among the "also receiving votes" category in the latest Div. III national poll, will travel to 11th-ranked Montclair State in New Jersey on Friday, Sept. 18, at 6 p.m.
