Cortland Blanks Oneonta, 3-0, in SUNYAC Opener

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three different players scored goals as the Cortland field hockey team defeated Oneonta, 3-0, in SUNYAC play Friday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The host Red Dragons improved to 4-2 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the win, while the visiting Red Dragons fell to 2-5 and 0-1.

Senior Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse), junior Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and freshman Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) each tallied a goal for Cortland with sophomore Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) collecting an assist.

Cortland freshman goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made four saves in posting the shutout. Senior goalie Krista Servedio (Shrub Oak/Lakeland) registered nine saves for Oneonta.

Oneonta appeared to have taken a 1-0 lead eight minutes into the game, but the officials ruled that senior Sara Rattigan's (Stormville/Carmel) shot came from outside the circle. Less than 90 seconds later, Welsh connected for the game-winner, her team-high fourth goal of the season, with a shot inside the left post. Stein pushed the lead to 2-0 going into the half, scoring off her own rebound in front at the 26:42 mark.

Murphy completed the scoring with her second goal of the season 6:18 into the second half. After a Cortland penalty corner, Murphy knocked in a loose ball at the right post.

Cortland returns to action on Saturday, hosting 17th-ranked New Paltz at 1 p.m. in a conference match up.
