O'Brien's Goal Lifts Cortland over #17 New Paltz

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Sophomore Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) scored 22:01 into the game and the Red Dragons held on to the lead the rest of the way as the Cortland field hockey team defeated nationally 17th-ranked New Paltz, 1-0, in SUNYAC competition Saturday afternoon. The Red Dragons improved to 5-2 overall and 2-0 in the conference with the win, while the visiting Hawks fell to 7-2 and 1-1.

Cortland freshman goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made nine saves in posting her second consecutive shutout and fourth of the season. Senior Meghan Coope (Farmingville/Sachem East) recorded two defensive saves, while senior Sara O'Brien (Amherst) and sophomore Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) each registered one defensive save.

Senior goalie Alayna Wageman (Getzville/Williamsville North) registered three saves for the Hawks. Senior Dani Ackerman (Nesconset/Smithtown East) had a game-high five shots for New Paltz.

On the game's lone goal, Cortland senior Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) took a shot from the left side of the circle that Wageman stopped, but O'Brien was there to put away the rebound.

New Paltz had two chances to capitalize on penalty strokes in the 15th and 19th minutes, but Reinoehl turned both aside making two diving saves to her right. The Hawks had several penalty corners down the stretch but were unable to generate any quality scoring chances.

Cortland returns to action on Wednesday, hosting Nazareth at 4 p.m. in a non-conference match up.
