CORTLAND, N.Y. – Three different players scored goals as the Cortland field hockey team defeated Nazareth College, 3-0, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 6-2 with the victory, while the Golden Flyers fell to 4-5.
Junior
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) paced Cortland with a goal and an assist. Senior
Brittany Murphy (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) and freshman
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) each scored a goal and sophomore
Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) chipped in with an assist. Freshman
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) started in goal and did not face a shot on goal in 63:29 before giving was to junior
Mairead Hourihan (Yorktown Heights/Lakeland), who did not make a save over the final 6:31.
Freshman goalie Kimber Nourse (Erieville/Cazenovia) registered 10 saves for Nazareth. Sophomores Marisa Walck (Ransomville/Wilson) and Kelsi Barnholt (Johnstown) each recorded a defensive save in the first half.
Welsh scored what proved to be the game winner, her team-high fifth goal of the season, 15:26 into the contest. After an initial save by Nourse, Welsh lifted a shot over the goalie and inside the left post from the right side. Stein made it a 2-0 game just 2:54 before the half when she took a pass from Redmond, spun with possession and blasted a shot that went through Nourse's pads.
Murphy completed the scoring 2:57 into the second half on a penalty corner. Senior
Jillian Vogl (Cazenovia) slipped a pass from the top of the circle to her right, where Stein delivered a pass to the left post that Murphy one-timed into an open goal for her third score of the season.
