CORTLAND, N.Y. – Cortland opened play at Day 1 of its 31st annual Red Dragon Women's Volleyball Classic with three-set losses to Stockton University and the University of Rochester.
The 12-team tournament features a predetermined schedule instead of pool play and championship brackets. Cortland (0-4) will face St. Lawrence Saturday at 11 a.m. and Utica at 4 p.m. Rochester, Buffalo State, Fredonia and Wells are each 2-0 after the first day of competition.
Cortland fell 25-18, 25-23, 25-21 to Stockton, an NCAA tournament team and New Jersey Athletic Conference champion last season.
Courtney Silberer (Centereach) led the Red Dragons with 11 kills and
Janine Patora (Salt Point/Arlington) added seven kills.
Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) paced the squad with 25 digs, with
Melanie McGuirk (Lido Beach/Kellenberg) and
Liz Roberts (Island Park/West Hempstead) adding 15 digs each.
The Red Dragons were then edged by Rochester, 25-19, 29-27, 25-23. Czeczotka totaled 12 kills with two errors in 28 attempts for a .357 attack percentage. Patora had seven kills and eight digs, Roberts ended with 31 assists and 11 digs, and McGuirk led the team with three aces and 14 digs. Silberer chipped in with six kills, two aces and 12 digs.
