Cortland Wins Twice at Skidmore Invite; Silberer and May on All-Tourney Team

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Cortland swept Sage Colleges in three sets and outlasted Skidmore in five sets to finish 2-1 at the Skidmore Invitational. The Red Dragons (11-8) beat Sage 25-16, 25-19, 25-22, and defeated Skidmore 16-25, 25-19, 25-19, 20-25, 15-7.

Courtney Silberer (Centerach) and Amanda May (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) were named to the all-tournament team. Silberer finished with a team-high 14 kills versus Sage and added 12 kills against Skidmore. May totaled 10 kills and just one error in 18 attempts for a .500 attack percentage and served three aces against Sage and led the Red Dragons with 13 kills and a .345 attack percentage and added five blocks against Skidmore.

Also against Sage, Nadia Moore (Durham, NC/Durham School of the Arts) finished with 10 kills and a .318 attack percentage and Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) totaled 30 assists for a 10-per-set average. Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) led the team with 16 digs.

In the Skidmore match, Deja Smith (Suffern) joined Silberer and May in the double figure kills club with 11. Piacentini totaled 40 assists and Graff registered four aces and 29 digs. Maria Gelyon (West Seneca/Immaculata Academy) led the Red Dragons with seven blocks, followed by Smith with six and May's five.

Cortland raced out to a 6-1 lead in the decisive fifth set versus Skidmore. The lead grew to 8-3 on the changeover and 12-4 after a block by Smith and Gelyon. Skidmore scored three of the next five points to get within 14-7 before Smith's kill ended the match.

Cortland will host Ithaca College in a non-league match Tuesday at 6 p.m.
