BROCKPORT, N.Y. – Senior defender
Jack Sumski (Lindenhurst) scored a pair of goals to lead the nationally 23rd-ranked Cortland men's soccer team to a 2-1 victory at The College at Brockport Saturday afternoon in SUNYAC action.
The Red Dragons won their seventh consecutive game, improving to 12-2 overall and 7-1 in the conference, and clinched a first-round bye in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament with one game remaining by virtue of a top-two finish in the regular-season standings.
Freshman
Miguel Tunas (North Salem) collected two assists, and senior
Daniel Friend (Deer Park) earned an assist for Cortland, while junior goalie
Connor Young (Bayport/Bayport-Blue Point) made six saves to run his season record to 7-0.
Quinton Volpe scored for the Golden Eagles (2-9-2, 1-5-1 SUNYAC). Goalie Ryan Cassidy registered nine saves, and Brockport also recorded one "team" save.
Volpe gave the Golden Eagles the lead just four minutes into the game when he converted a penalty kick. Sumski tied the game 1:39 before the half. After a Brockport foul, Tunas served a ball into the box from midfield, and Sumski deposited a shot into the bottom right of the goal. The game winner came in the 80th minute as Sumski again scored into the lower right of the goal off Friend's header after Tunas served a corner kick into the box.
