ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Cortland field hockey team clinched at least the second seed in the upcoming SUNYAC Tournament with a 3-0 victory at Oneonta Friday afternoon. The visiting Red Dragons improved to 11-3 overall and 5-0 in the conference and will face New Paltz, also 5-0 in the league, on Saturday at 1 p.m., with the winner earning the regular-season title and the top seed.
Sophomore
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) scored twice for Cortland, while senior
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) tallied a goal and an assist. Senior
Kendall Allmendinger (East Islip) and junior
Meg Redmond (Accord/Rondout Valley) each registered a defensive save.
Cortland sophomore goalkeeper
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made six saves in posting the shutout. Goalie Cassandra Miller also turned aside six shots for the host Red Dragons (3-10, 2-3 SUNYAC).
Stein gave Cortland an early 1-0 lead with her 12th goal of the season when she scored off a scramble in front just 1:29 into the game. Welsh made it a 2-0 game at 17:11 with a shot from the top of the arc. Welsh then added her second goal of the game and team-high 13th of the season off Stein's assist at 23:22 to complete the scoring.
