Red Dragon Fall to Geneseo and New Paltz to Close Out SUNYAC Play

CORTLAND, N.Y. - Cortland lost a three-set match to Geneseo and a four-set decision to New Paltz to conclude SUNYAC regular-season play at Corey Gymnasium. Geneseo defeated the Red Dragons 25-21, 25-17, 25-16, and New Paltz won by scores of 25-17, 25-21, 16-25 and 25-16.

Cortland (16-13 overall) finished seventh in the league standings with a 3-6 record and missed qualifying for the SUNYAC postseason tournament by one spot. Geneseo (15-11, 5-4) tied for fifth with Oswego and will be the fifth seed in the six-team tournament, while New Paltz (16-10, 7-2) tied for second with Oneonta and will be the third seed. Brockport won the league regular-season title with a 9-0 conference record.

Nicole Silberer (Centereach) led Cortland versus Geneseo with seven kills and two blocks. Deja Smith (Suffern) added six kills and a .235 attack percentage. Sarah Piacentini (Webster/Webster Schroeder) led the team with 14 digs and 19 assists, Alexandra Graff (Apex, NC) had 13 digs, and Samantha Czeczotka (Elwood/John H. Glenn) added 12 digs.

Grace Cergol led Geneseo with 20 kills and Shea Casey and Emily Ast registered 20 and 17 assists, respectively.

Silberer again led Cortland in its match versus New Paltz with 13 kills, while her sister Courtney Silberer (Centereach) had six kills. Piacentini handed out 25 assists, Graff finished with 26 digs, and Valerie Fischer (Wiliston Park/Mineola) contributed 13 digs and five kills.

Morgan Roessler paced New Paltz with 19 kills and five blocks and Brittany Tyack had 11 kills.

Cortland will travel to St. John Fisher for a non-league match Wednesday at 6 p.m.
