CORTLAND, N.Y. – Senior Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) and junior Megan O'Brien (Holmes/Carmel) each recorded a hat trick as the Cortland field hockey team defeated St. Lawrence, 8-2, in non-conference action Wednesday afternoon. The Red Dragons won their eighth straight game, imrpoving to 13-3 on the season, while the Saints fell to 5-11.

Sophomore Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) added one goal and two assists for Cortland, sophomore Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) scored a goal and junior Anna Branch (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) registered two assists. Sophomore goalie Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) made nine saves.

Senior Carly Dziekan (Yorkville/New York Mills) and sophomore Alex Clark (Simsbury, CT) tallied goals for the Saints with junior Maggie Wraight (Southborough, MA/Algonquin) earning an assist. Dziekan also recorded a defensive save, and senior goalie Julia Hudson (South Burlington, VT) turned aside 10 shots.

Cortland built a 3-0 lead less than 10 minutes into the game. O'Brien scored her first of the game at 5:14 with a one-time shot out of midair. Gibaldi made it 2-0 at 6:45 on a rebound in front and Stein's first goal on a one-time shot at 8:18 pushed the lead to 3-0.

St. Lawrence got back into the game as the team's scored three goals in a three and a half minute span. Clark swept in a one-time shot on Wraight's cross at 20:43. O'Brien scored on a deflection at 23:13, and Dziekan knocked in a rebound just 62 seconds later to make it a 4-2 game at the half.

The Red Dragons sealed the win by outscoring the Saints, 4-0, over the final 35 minutes. O'Brien completed her first career hat trick at 45:10 on a sharp-angled shot off a defender. Welsh made it a 6-0 score 1:32 later with a hard blast from six yards out. Stein then scored the final two goals at 55:50 and 63:53, respectively, to finish off her hat trick and the 8-2 victory.
