SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Senior
Gabby Stein (Endwell/Maine-Endwell) knocked in a rebound 9:29 into overtime to give the Cortland field hockey team a 2-1 come-from-behind victory at Union Saturday afternoon in non-conference action. The Red Dragons closed out their regular season at 14-3 and return to action on Wednesday when they host Oneonta in the SUNYAC Semifinals at 2 p.m. The Dutchwomen fell to 4-13.
Sophomore
Jess Gibaldi (Westbury/W.T. Clarke) tallied Cortland's first goal of the game, and sophomore
Jessica Welsh (Hamilton) assisted on the game-winning score. Sophomore goalie
Kailynne Reinoehl (Lititz, PA/Warwick) turned aside 13 shots.
Stephanie Resnick scored for Union with Hannah Christian collecting an assist. Goalkeeper Laura Aplowitz registered 18 saves, and Allison Cosentino and Lindsay Barson each recorded a defensive save.
Resnick gave the Dutchwomen the lead at the 16:33 mark, taking a pass from Christian and scoring from the left side deep in the circle. The lead help up until 10:41 remained in regulation when Gibaldi dribbled around Aplowitz, who had charged off her goal line, and tapped a shot into the empty cage for her ninth goal of the season.
In overtime, Cortland outshot Union, 12-1, and scored the game winner at 79:29. After Welsh had a shot denied by Aplowitz, she got a stick on the rebound and Stein buried a shot at the right post for her team-high 16th goal of the season.
