Cortland Downs Canton, 5-3, in Men's Hockey

CANTON, N.Y. – The Cortland men's hockey team erased a 2-0 second-period deficit and earned a 5-3 win at Canton Saturday night in non-conference action. The Red Dragons evened their record at 1-1, while the Kangaroos fell to 1-1 as the teams split the two game series.

Junior Andrew McCann (Bowmanville, ON/Wellington Dukes) led Cortland with a pair of goals. Junior Darren McCormick (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) tallied one goal and two assists, junior Dan Broderick (White Plains/New York PAL Islanders) recorded one goal and one assist, and freshman Dougie Elgstam (Stockholm, Sweden/New Jersey Rockets) added a goal.

Sophomore Mike Crowley (Buffalo/Springfield Blues) chipped in with two assists for the Red Dragons, and freshman Stefano Alonzi (Maple, ON/Burlington Cougars), Connor Beck (Richmond Hill, ON/Toronto Jr. Canadiens) and Wilson Vershay (Buffalo/Buffalo Jr. Sabres) each earned an assist. Freshman goalie Chris Bastone (Greenwich, CT/New Hampshire Jr. Monarchs) made 24 saves in his first collegiate start.

Josh Sova, Vili-Jesper Koivula and Ben Beasley each netted a goal for Canton. J.P. Langlois recorded two assists. Kasey Kulczycki, David Hopfer and Tyler Bullard collected one assist apiece. Goalie Michael Cerasuolo stopped 22 shots.

Canton took a 2-0 lead as Sova scored at 19:01 of the first period on a two-man advantage and Koivula netted an unassisted goal at 8:40 of the second period. McCormick cut the Cortland deficit to 2-1 at 13:46 of the second, and Elgstam and McCann scored less than two and a half minutes apart late in the period to give Cortland a 3-2 lead.

McCann's power-play goal 2:20 into the third period made it 4-2 before Beasley notched a power-play goal for the Kangaroos at 5:51 to again make it a one-goal game. Broderick added an insurance goal at 15:41 and Cortland held on for the 5-3 win.
